CKSP Welcome

Latest News

Sadly, the CKSP seisiún is no more. We had a good run - 8 years, but in the end the attendance dwindled to almost nothing. The seisiún was moved to the Plough and Stars a few blocks away and ran for another two years before I decided that it was time to give the time slot to someone else.

Our inaugural seisiún was held on Monday, the 30th of April, 2000. We had about 15 or so players in attendance, with many more who came out simply to hear us play.  A great time was had by all, and I think that we impressed the folks at the pub, who did not know what to expect of us. Now, in our ninth month at the '32, Francis and Brendan are very pleased with our music and what we are doing, and we have expanded our schedule from once to twice a month, starting in January.

We meet at 7:30pm on the SECOND and LAST Mondays of each month at Ireland's 32 located at 3920 Geary Blvd. (between 2nd and 3rd) in San Francisco. Ireland's 32 is a nice, clean pub with a good but limited food menu.

While this is a Comhaltas sponsored event, you need not be a member of Comhaltas to join in on the fun.

The seisiún starts between 7:30 and 8:00pm, depending on how early people begin to arrive. Between the time that we start and about 9:00pm, we run in a 'slowplay' mode, where we select and play (at about ½ speed), tunes from our Playlist. During this first hour and a half, we encourage people to keep to our published list and to keep the pace slow. Our intent is to assist beginning players to get familiar with some standard tunes, to learn to play from memory, and to learn to play in a seisiún environment, so they can make the transition to a regular seisiún.

After 9:00 PM, the seisiún will shift to a more traditional pace, and we welcome any and all players who are capable of starting or following the tunes to join in the seisiún atmosphere.  No formal lists of tunes will be developed, but Irish dance tunes will form the focus of the fun.  The occasional air, song or other Celtic tune might surface from time to time.  Players of all levels who are intrigued by an unfamiliar tune are encouraged to listen intently and/or record the tune on tape, to learn and practice it for the next seisiún.

We have experienced players to lead the seisiún, and from time to time we will try to get 'special guests' to lead us in our revels.

Basic seisiún etiquette will be strongly endorsed but loosely enforced, especially in the second half.  Tape recorders are welcome throughout the evening to assist in capturing elusive tunes and learning them by ear between meetings.

Our Playlist is puplished on our site, and it provides the tunes the following formats: .abc, .pdf, .gif and midi.

We have also started seisiúns to play before the Comhaltas monthly ceilis, and they have been a lot of fun.

Please contact myself or Michael Riemer for more information, or
